From 20 years in the United States Navy to two decades in federal service, Tyrone Brown has spent his adult life serving others — and he's not done yet.
A lifetime of public service
Brown understands service because it has been a central part of his adult life.
He served 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring from military service in 2004. He then continued serving the public through a second career in the federal government that spanned approximately two decades.
Brown ultimately served as Director of Quality Assurance for the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
His leadership responsibilities provided experience working across major program areas, including contracting and acquisition, strategic outreach and communications, information technology and integration, administration and operations, and the Women-Owned Small Business Program.
That experience helped shape a leadership philosophy centered on standards, accountability, process improvement, teamwork, and measurable results—principles Brown believes are just as important in local government.
Service beyond town hall
Brown's commitment to community extends beyond elected office.
He serves as a Process Engineer and Board Member of Mind The Environment Inc., a community-focused nonprofit working to create community gardening opportunities, encourage outdoor family activities, teach gardening and composting, and help residents connect with the natural environment.
For Brown, community service and public office share the same basic purpose: bringing people together to solve problems and create opportunities.
Why he's running
Brown believes Dumfries is at an important point in its future.
Growth and development bring opportunity, but they also require thoughtful planning, responsible leadership, transparency, and accountability. Town leaders must support local businesses, protect the interests of residents, manage taxpayer resources responsibly, and make decisions based on both today's needs and tomorrow's consequences.
Most importantly, Brown believes residents should have a meaningful voice in those decisions.
After a lifetime of military, federal, community, and local government service, Tyrone Brown is ready to bring his experience back to the Dumfries Town Council.
He's running with a simple belief: the people who call Dumfries home should have a voice in shaping its future.
